Swim to the Surface

I never wanted it to come to this.

The pain was as accidental as the falling.

Your lips touched me before your first hello,

And I knew that was the end and the beginning for me.

The end of my heart’s isolation,

And the beginning of the rest of my life.

But how could we have known?

Known that this love would pull us both under like a tidal wave,

And neither of us knew how to swim?

So we drowned in each other,

Neither of us allowing the other to come up for air when we needed it most.

We held each other within the peaceful quiet of this ocean of love,

Never realizing that all we had to do in order to survive these waters,

Was to let go and swim to the surface together.
