So here’s today’s little factoid about me: I am a trained specialty coffee barista! Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds. Everything from brewing a basic cup of drip coffee, to pulling the perfectly balanced espresso shot, I can do it all! Not to toot my own horn (toot toot), but I have a deep, unwavering love for coffee and all things coffee related and I am not afraid to admit it.
Many of you might not know this, but there is a lot of science that goes into that lovely latte or cool cold brew you crave (all the way down to fats and lipids, but I won’t dive that deep in this post). To get a beautifully balanced flavor (balanced meaning you can taste each of the particular flavor notes without it being bitter, sour, etc.), there are a lot of components to consider. Something as simple as the temperature of your water can affect the all around taste. Even the way in which the beans are roasted can cause major differences.
Like I said: a lot of science.
While that is all fun and interesting, lets just talk about why coffee is such an integral part of society. It seems as though coffee shops are popping up on every single street corner, busy or quiet. It’s where we go to meet up with friends, or to get work done on our laptops. I’ve been known to find a comfy coffee shop couch to curl up on to read a book. Coffee builds communities. It brings us together in a safe space of shared interest.
Perhaps it’s the ritual of that hot cup of coffee in the early daylight hours helping to get me pumped to start my day, or that cozy Sunday cup on my patio, breathing in the fresh morning air. Whatever the case may be, it’s something I look forward to everyday.
